Attempt to murder case against Santhanam

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, SEPT. 6. The Madurai district police today registered an attempt to murder case against the Usilampatti MLA and All-India Forward Bloc leader, L. Santhanam, and several others in connection with yesterday's group clash during the opening of the P.K. Mookiah Thevar memorial at Usilampatti.

The AIFB and AIFB (Vallarasu faction) cadres clashed minutes before the opening of the memorial on the Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar College premises.

Based on a complaint lodged by the AIFB State Youth Wing secretary, S. Ilangovan (Mr. Santhanam's son), the Usilampatti police registered a case against 13 persons, including the AIFB (Vallarasu faction) general secretary, P.V. Kathiravan.

While nine party functionaries were arrested early today and remanded to judicial custody, Mr. Kathiravan and K. Deivendran were admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital with ``minor'' injuries, police sources said. The Usilampatti Town police registered cases against both groups under Sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapons), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (causing hurt with dangerous weapons) and 307 (attempt to murder). More arrests were likely soon, the sources said.
