CHENNAI, SEPT. 6. Even as a city magistrate visited the Chennai Central Prison to ascertain the health condition of seven POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Act) prisoners, on fast since August 26, four other accused began a fast on September 3. According to sources, XIV metropolitan magistrate visited the prison at the instance of the chief metropolitan magistrate. He is to file a report to the CMM on the health condition of the fasting detenus. Meanwhile, four more POTA detenus have joined their fasting colleagues. The number of POTA accused on fast has gone up to 11 in the Chennai prison alone. The four who began a fast on September 3 are A. Palanisamy, S. Duraisingavel, A. Madhiah and K. Ravi. In the central prison here are 20 POTA detenus, all transferred from the Salem Central Prison in February this year. They are among the 26 persons arrested by the Uthangkarai police in Dharmapuri district in November 2002. While two of the arrested were adjudged juveniles and ordered to be tried under the relevant law, the others, who included six women, could not even get bail for the past 22 months. The `Q' branch police are yet to file a charge sheet.
Stir enters 10th day
Our Vellore Staff Reporter reports The three POTA detenus Anandi, Joyce Mary and Rita Mary continued their fast for the 10th day today, pressing for withdrawal of the cases against them. The trio are among the six women who were arrested for their alleged involvement in violent incidents that occurred in the Uthangkarai police station limits in Krishnagiri district and the Kallavi police station limits in Dharmapuri district in November 2002.
