CHENNAI, SEPT. 8. A consignment of marine wildlife bound for Malaysia, weighing nearly 3,814 kg was seized here recently by the Docks Intelligence Unit of the Customs department. The sea horses, sea cucumbers and sea pipe fish, worth Rs. 14 crores in the international market, were seized from a container in a freight station when officials checked two consignments of `dried sardines' for which two shipping bills were filed by a Chennai-based exporter. While one consignment contained the declared item, the other had the seized marine species is worth Rs. 2.40 crores in the domestic market. Export of marine life species is prohibited under Schedule I of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. The Joint Commissioner (DIU), R. Mohandoss, said in a press release today that the consignments were seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. One person has been arrested.
