CHENNAI, SEPT. 8. The Tamil Nadu Women's Forum today launched from Chennai a "People's March" to create awareness of food sovereignty and self-sufficiency. The march would be organised throughout the State till September 12. Bernard Fathima, who is heading the march, said its aim was "to release agriculture from the grip of multinationals, to fervently oppose genetic engineering technology and fertilizers and promote organic and traditional farming methods." The march was started in Malaysia on September 1 and then to Sri Lanka and India. From here the people's march would proceed before reaching Nepal. The march is jointly organised by the Pesticide Action Network Asia and the Pacific (PAN). Jennifer Mourin, coordinator, Campaign and Media, PAN, told mediapersons that big corporates were making profits more than the GDP of some countries and were making the deals and pushing policies during the throats of unwary governments. Kaveri Dutt, coordinator, Human and Environmental Rights Programme, said in Sri Lanka, she found that the country was facing the most severe drought, selling milk for Rs. 14 a litre but water cost Rs. 40 a litre. The fisherfolk and the ecology suffered the most with "dynamite fishing" and use of trawlers.
