dated September 11, 1954: Significance of Onam

The Malayalee Club, Madras, celebrated Onam on September 10, at the Museum Theatre, Egmore. Mr. K. Ramunni Menon, I.C.S., Chief Secretary to the Government, who presided, said it was creditable that such a function was organised every year, which afforded the Malayalee residents of Madras to get together. Onam had many lessons for them. The festival was celebrated by all people irrespective of caste, community or religion. It showed a spirit of tolerance which enabled all of them to join together in this thanksgiving service, for, Onam was a harvest festival and represented the joyous upsurge of the Malayalee cultivator. It also reminded them of the need for charity, and also taught them the lesson of humility.
