Plea for wage revision

By Our Staff Reporter

KANNUR, SEPT. 11. The Hind Mazdoor Sangh (HMS) president, Thamban Thomas, has urged the Central Government to constitute the Sixth Pay Commission for wage revision of Government employees.

Addressing a press conference here today, Mr. Thomas said that though the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government's decision to revise workers' wages on the basis of the price index was a welcome move, lack of appropriate industrial policies aimed at creating new job opportunities, opening up of the services sector to foreign direct investment, uncontrolled rise of inflation and failure to introduce wage revision were causing concern.

Mr. Thomas sought interim relief to the employees considering the `steep hike' in expenditure and fall in rupee value. The Government should give priority to restoring farm subsidies and writing off agriculture loans for saving the agriculture sector. Poverty eradication would be possible by making job a fundamental right and creating job opportunities. The food-for-work and noon meal programmes approved by the Planning Commission should be extended to all districts.

The HMS leader said his union was working for making the idea of a single national trade union a reality. The proposal had been accepted by all major trade unions. Trade unions all over the world were merging for united bargaining power.
