Archdiocese takes out protest march

By Our Staff Reporter

THRISSUR, SEPT. 11. A rally was taken out in the city this afternoon under the auspices of the Thrissur Archdiocese to press the demand for the arrest of the `real culprits' behind the murder Fr. Job Chittilappilly, of the Thiruthiparambu church, on August 28 last.

Inaugurating a public meeting held after the rally, the Metropolitan of the Church of the East, Mar Aprem, said the murder of Fr. Chittilappilly was a blot on the tradition of religious tolerance in the State. The Metropolitan said communal harmony would be strengthened in the State only when steps were taken to ensure that such violent acts do not recur. This would be possible only when the conspiracy behind the murder was exposed and those who had really committed the act were brought before the due legal process.

The Archbishop, Mar Jacob Thumkuzhy, who is also vice-president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI),

said the former Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, and his successor, Oommen Chandy, had contacted him on the issue. "There is no doubt about their sincerity and openness. But, no significant headway has been made so far on the issue," he said.

The Irinjalakkuda Bishop, Mar James Pazhayattil, delivered the introductory address.

A large number of priests, nuns, and laymen participated in the rally, which began from the New Church and culminated in front of the Thrissur Corporation.

Mani visits church

Meanwhile, the Revenue Minister, K.M. Mani, today visited the Thiruthiparambu church, along with the MLAs, Thomas Unniyadan, Savithri Lakshmanan and T.U. Radhakrishnan, and the District Collector, Premachandra Kurup. Later, talking to the reporters, the Minister said the Government was ready to conduct any form of probe into the murder of Fr. Job Chittilappilly. He said he would inform the Chief Minister about the concerns expressed by the Irinjalakkuda diocese leadership and the people of the area over the ongoing investigations into the case.
