Hurricane slams Grand Cayman

GEORGETOWN (CAYMAN ISLANDS), SEPT. 12. Hurricane Ivan lost its catastrophic capabilities but could still make a destructive direct hit on Grand Cayman on Sunday, where it uprooted trees, burst the banks of canals and flooded some homes with raging winds near 249 kmph.

``We know there is damage and it is severe,'' said an official, adding telephone reports of roofs blown off and flooded homes were coming in from all over the island.

The hurricane had grown to a rare top-Category 5 storm with 265 kmph winds on Saturday. Ivan storm has killed 56 people across the Caribbean so far this week, including 34 persons in Grenada and 11 in Jamaica. — AP
