Dalai Lama envoys going to China

BEIJING, SEPT. 12. Envoys to the Dalai Lama were to leave for China from India today to promote dialogue between the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader and the Beijing Government, his secretary said in a statement.

Earlier this year, the Dalai Lama said his envoys had established direct contact with the Chinese Government during trips to Beijing in 2002 and 2003.

He said he hoped for a breakthrough on the Tibet issue this year following China's statement that it was "always open" to negotiations. — AP
