DURBAN, SEPT. 12. The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who will arrive in South Africa for a four-day official visit on Tuesday, will make a special visit to the Phoenix settlement here which was established by Mahatma Gandhi in the late 19th century. "Mr. Kalam will be gracing the settlement because it is of historical importance to both India and South Africa," the chairman of the Phoenix Settlement Trust, Mewalal Ramgobin, said in an interview today. "We feel confident that President Kalam will highlight the historical links and relate it to the centenary celebrations of the Phoenix settlement," Mr. Ramgobin added. On Thursday, Mr. Kalam will attend a special function organised by the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Sbu Ndebele, at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall and visit the local railway station where Gandhi was dumped after being evicted from a ``whites-only'' coach while travelling between Durban and Johannesburg in the late 1890s.
