Anju finishes fourth

MONACO, SEPT. 19. Long jumper Anju Bobby George missed out on a bronze medal by finishing fourth in the World athletics final here on Saturday.

The event, where Anju registered a best jump of 6.61 metres, was again dominated by the three Russians who had emerged victorious at the Olympics last month.

Irina Simagina, the Athens silver medallist, took gold with a jump of 6.74m, while Tatyana Lebedeva, the Olympic gold medal winner, won silver at 6.72m.

Tatyana Kotova, who had won bronze at the Olympics, again ended up with a third-place finish.

Powell is fastest

Meanwhile, Jamaica's Asafa Powell held off Olympic silver medallist Francis Obikwelu to win the men's 100 metres. Powell led from out of the blocks and finished in 9.98 seconds to easily beat the rest of the field.

Portuguese Obikwelu was second in 10.10 with Aziz Zakari of Ghana third in 10.15.

World champion Kim Collins of St. Kitts and Nevis was fifth, 28-hundredths of a second behind Powell.

Meanwhile, Britain's double Olympic champion Kelly Holmes sprinted to an emphatic victory in the women's 1,500 metres.

800m: 1. Saad Youssef Kamel (Bah) 1 min, 45.91s, 2. Joseph Mutua (Ken), 3. Bram Som (Ned).

3,000: 1. Eliud Kipchoge (Ken) 7:38.67s, 2. James Kwalia (Ken), 3. Mulugeta Wendimu (Eth).

Pole vault: 1. Timothy Mack (U.S.) 6.01m, 2. Toby Stevenson (U.S.) 3. Derek Miles (U.S.).

Triple jump: 1. Christian Olsson (Swe) 17.66m, 2. Danila Burkenya (Rus), 3. Kenta Bell (U.S.).

Discus: 1. Mario Pestano (Esp) 64.11m, 2. Zoltan Kovago (Hun), 3. Aleksander Tammert (Est).

Women: 200m: 1. Veronica Campbell (Jam) 22.64s, 2. Debbie Ferguson (Bah), 3. Aleen Bailey (Jam).

400m hurdles: 1. Sandra Glover (U.S.) 54.57s, 2. Tetiana Tereschuk-Antipova (Ukr), 3. Brenda Taylor (U.S.).

5,000m: 1. Elvan Abeylegesse (Tur) 14:59.19s, 2. Isabella Ochichi (Ken), 3. Ejegayehu Dibaba (Eth).

High jump: 1. Yelena Slesarenko (Rus) 2.01m, 2. Viktoriya Styopina (Ukr), 3. Iryna Mykhalchenko (Ukr).

Long jump: 1. Irina Simagina (Rus) 6.74m, 2. Tatyana Lebedeva (Rus), 3. Tatyana Kotova (Rus).
