Traditional technologies making a comeback

By Our Agriculture Correspondent

CHENNAI, SEPT. 20. Traditional technologies have been an integral part of life for centuries, and increasingly society is coming to accept the products of traditional technology and knowledge, said M. Anandakrishnan, Chairman, Madras Institute of Development Studies, Chennai.

There have been systematic attempts to regenerate or extract some of the best practices of traditional knowledge. Scientific inputs are going into upgrading and validating traditional knowledge, and given the increasing international support for such efforts as indicated by several endorsements and agreements, ``there is an enabling atmosphere to protect the indigenous knowledge systems and traditional technologies in various fields.''

Some of the traditional technologies in pest proofing of pigeon pea in Andhra Pradesh and in developing memory-enhancing herbal medicine have been put to good use in recent times, he said.

Prof. Anandakrishnan was delivering the Dr. C.V. Seshadri Memorial lecture on "Revival of Traditional Technologies" here recently, organised by Shri AMM Murugappa Chettiar Research Institute. M.V. Murugappan, Chairman, MCRC, welcomed the gathering. P.N. Raju, Acting Director, MCRC, proposed a vote of thanks.
