Mega IT show coming up in Chennai

CHENNAI, SEPT. 20. Connect 2004, the fourth edition of the four-day international exhibition and conference on information and communication technologies, which opens here on Wednesday, will highlight opportunities in the Indian IT sector, particularly in Tamil Nadu.

Delegations from Malaysia, Thailand, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Dubai and South Korea will be taking part in the exhibition, which will also see presentations by the Information Technology Secretaries of West Bengal and the four Southern States on e-governance.

Connect 2004, which is organised by the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Confederation of Indian Industry at the Chennai Trade Centre, boasts a one-third increase in the exhibition floor space over last year and 70 per cent repeat participation by exhibitors from within the country and abroad.

Strengths in `INVEST'

Addressing a press conference here today, D. Jayakumar, Tamil Nadu Minister for Law and IT, said the State, with its strengths in ``INVEST'' (infrastructure, network capability or bandwidth, vision, e-governance, (political) stability and talent pool), was fast emerging as a leading destination for IT investments and a major exporter of the sector.

Tamil Nadu IT Secretary, Vivek Harinarain, said the State's pavilion would depict the scope for IT development in tier-II and tier-III towns including Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchi and Hosur.

R. Ramaraj, co-chairman, Connect 2004, said the conference would be devoted to the role of IT in governance, manufacturing excellence and the service sector.

Speakers include Kraisorn Pornsutee, Deputy Permanent Secretary to Thailand's Ministry of Information and Communication Technology; Azim Premji, Wipro Chairman, and representatives of Motorola, IBM, SAP, Sify, Tata Teleservices, Ford, St. Gobain, ICICI Infotech, KPMG, Nicholas Piramal etc.

R. Chandrasekhar, Joint Secretary, e-governance, and Pankaj Agrawala, Director of Grievances of the Department of Information Technology of the Union Government, will participate in the "iGovern conference" on September 23.

Leading exhibitors include IBM, with a product specifically designed for small and medium enterprises, Intel, Ingram Micro, Symantec, Eagle ACD, Imation, Adobe, BSNL, Hewlett Packard, TVS Electronics, Sify and Polaris.
