CHENNAI, SEPT. 20. Armed men struck terror in Virugambakkam last night when they pushed their way into a house, attacked the three inmates -- two of them women -- and robbed 20 sovereigns of jewellery and Rs. 7,000 in cash. Police said four men, armed with knives, knocked at the house of Ramasamy on Third Cross Street of AVM Nagar around 9.30 p.m. Mr. Ramasamy, who had retired from the AVM studios, was living with his wife Valliammal and daughter Seethalakshmi in the first floor. His son is working in the United States. The men, who drew Mr. Ramasamy into a conversation, pounced on him and barged their way into the house. Hearing the commotion, Mr. Ramasamy's wife and daughter, who were sitting in another room, came to the living room. The gangsters, brandishing the sharp weapons, warned the women not to raise the alarm. They proceeded to push Mr. Ramasamy into a room and gagged his mouth. They then obtained keys to a steel almirah in the house from the women and took the jewellery and cash. Police said the four men could have had information about the victim's family as one of them asked Mrs. Valliammal where the rest of the cash, sent by her son from the U.S., was kept.
