When will R.K. Mutt Road be blacktopped?

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, SEPT. 20. The restoration of bus services on Ramakrishna Mutt Road last fortnight brought back the smiles on the faces of the residents. But their happiness has been short-lived. For, road users have to contend with the dust generated by buses plying on the unpaved road.

Digging, which began over a year ago, has affected road users and residents in some way or the other. Until a while ago, several stretches of the road suffered frequent sewer bursts and diversion of buses due to laying of a new line as part of the Chennai City River Conservation Project.

With the work still going on in the stretch near Mandaveli Canara Bank, the buses plying towards Adyar through R.K. Mutt Road, including 5B and 29C, have been restored.

However, with the road not blacktopped, the road users are subjected to bumpy rides and clouds of dust. A. Velu, who owns a shop on R.K. Mutt Road, said though the buses were plying on one side of the road due to the ongoing work near Canara Bank branch, they leave a thick cloud of dust on their trail.

This is the case with other parts of this unpaved road too after completion of the project. Residents welcomed the restoration of buses, but they find it very difficult to wait in the bus stand because of the dust.

Ward 147 councillor, Lakshmi Suresh (BJP), said work estimates for laying the road was passed in the Corporation council six months ago and the ward has been awaiting a completion report from Metrowater to begin the work. She recalled Chennai Metrowater's assurance a few months ago that the work would be completed in March 2005.

Responding to the residents' complaints, a Metrowater official said the work on the stretch would be completed soon to facilitate laying of the road.
