Mahasammelan on Saturday

SHIMOGA SEPT. 21. Preparations are on for the Akhil Karnataka Vishwa Karma Mahasammelan here on Saturday. Disclosing this to presspersons on Tuesday, the vice-president of the District Vishwa Karma Mahasammelan, D. Satyanarayana, said the conference would be held under the guidance of the Vishwa Karma Moola Samsthana Sugyanana Prabhu Peethadhyaksha, Guru Shivasugyananamurthy Swamiji. The heads of the branches of the math would participate in the conference. The Shimoga MP and former Chief Minister, S. Bangarappa, would inaugurate the conference to be held under the chairmanship of K.P. Nanjundacharya, president of the Akhil Karnataka Vishwa Karma Mahasammelan. The Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, B.S. Yediyurappa, the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, D.H. Shankaramurthy, the MLC, Mir Azeez Ahmed, the MLAs, K.S. Eshwarappa, G. Basavannappa, B.K. Sangamesh, Araga Jnanendra, Beluru Gopalakrishna and Haratalu Halappa, would participate in the conference. The conference would urge the Government to consider Vishwa Karmis as a backward class and earmark three per cent reservation for them in education and recruitments, he added.

Interim report by December

DHARWAD SEPT. 21. The State Backward Class Commission is likely to submit an interim report by this December. S. Siddalingaiah, Chairman of the commission, told presspersons here that the commission had received 348 memoranda from 240 castes and 21 memoranda were received during a hearing in Dharwad on Monday. The commission would ask the Government to act on memoranda after going through the educational, economic and social status of the castes in terms of Section 91 of the Backward Classes Act, 1995. Mr. Siddalingaiah said the commission would conduct a caste-wise survey and Census of backward classes in the State soon for which Rs. 2 crores had been released. Mr. Siddalingaiah said the commission would recommend to the Government to take action against the officials who did not implement reservation facilities and schemes for the welfare of backward classes.

Workshop from October 3

HUBLI SEPT. 21. A workshop on the philosophy of Basaveshwara will be held in Dharwad for 15 days from October 3. Organised under the auspices of the Jaganmatha Akkamahadevi Ashram Trust, the workshop aims at creating awareness on the ideals of Basaveshwara. It is open for all. Mathe Mahadevi, chairperson of the Basava Mission and the trust told presspersons here today that courses in yoga and discourses would be held for the participants. An analysis of the concept of welfare State preached by Basaveshwara and its practice would help find solution to many problems. In this connection, a "Lingayat Dharma Jagriti Sammelan'' would be held from October 16 in Dharwad, she said. Committees had been formed to organise the two events, she added.

Confiscated rice auctioned

MANGALORE SEPT. 21. The Department of Food and Civil Supplies today auctioned rice confiscated here some time ago. The Commissioner of the department, B.H. Anil Kumar, told The Hindu that the auction was held to clear rice seized from Kewill Cashew Factory and K.V. Kamath Godown. As many as 7,102.50 quintals confiscated from the factory were auctioned for Rs. 1,017.13 a bag of 50 kg, while 17,089.50 quintals seized from the godown were auctioned for Rs. 910.30 a bag, he added.

Two killed in road accident

TUMKUR SEPT. 21. Two persons died when a goods carrier collided with a stationary lorry at Kora near here on Tuesday. The police gave the name of dead as the driver of the goods carrier, Yellappa (30). The identity of the cleaner of the lorry was yet to be ascertained, the police said.

Okkoota to be formed

CHIKMAGALUR SEPT. 21. Various women's organisations in Chikmagalur district have decided to come together under a banner, Bharathiya Mahila Okkoota, to fight against the exploitation of women. Shashikala B. Nayak, secretary of the okkoota, told presspersons here today that there was a need for women's organisations to unite and fight against atrocities. An agitation would be launched demanding that women be given adequate protection. Mohini Sidde Gowda, president of the okkoota, regretted that women were not being treated properly in police stations. Her organisation would urge the Government to establish a women's police station in Chikmagalur. Criticising the Government for reducing the allocation for Stree Shakti self-help groups, Ms. Sidde Gowda said members of such groups had not been given yellow ration cards. H.B. Lakshmi, Chikmagalur City Municipal Council member, and Rekha Huliyappa Gowda, former member of the zilla panchayat, were present.
