Vivek Rai made Vice-Chancellor

Bangalore Sept. 21. The Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, today appointed B.A. Vivek Rai as the Vice-Chancellor of Kannada University, Hampi, which was without a head for over six months. Prof. Rai, who is professor of Kannada in Mangalore University, will have a three-year tenure, according to a Raj Bhavan press release.

Counselling for Nursing seats

BANGALORE Sept. 21. The seat selection process for admission to first year B.Sc. Nursing, B.Pharm and BPT courses in government colleges and for government seats in private colleges for the academic year 2004-05 will be held from September 26 to 30 at the Bangalore Medical College auditorium. The counselling will be open only to Karnataka students. For B.Sc. Nursing, the seat selection will be on September 26 (10 a.m. - Special Categories, 11 a.m. - GM and all other categories) and September 27 (10 a.m. - 45 per cent and above, GM and all other categories, 40 per cent and above, SC/ST Category-1; 3 p.m. - Casual Vacancy Round). For B.Pharm, counselling will be on September 28 (10 a.m. - Special Categories, 11 a.m. - 50 per cent and above, GM and all other categories, 40 per cent and above, SC/ST Category-1). The Casual Vacancy Round will start at 5 p.m. the same day. For BPT, the seat selection process is scheduled for September 30. Special category students can select seats from 10 a.m. onwards, GM and all other categories from 11 a.m. onwards. For second year B.Pharm, the process will be at 3 p.m. The Casual Vacancy Round will start at 5 p.m., the Director of Medical Education, S. Ramananda Shetty, said in a release.

Additional coach on trains

BANGALORE SEPT. 21. In order to clear the waiting list and in view of the extra rush, one extra three-tier second-class sleeper coach will be added to the following trains on Wednesday, a press release from South Western Railway says: (Train no. 6526) Bangalore-Kanyakumari Express, (Train no. 5625) Bangalore City-Guwahati Express, (Train no. 8004) Yeshwantpur-Howrah Express. Telecom services from Powergrid

Bangalore Sept. 21. On Wednesday, the Union Power Minister, P.M. Sayeed, will inaugurate the regional telecom control centre of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (now known as Powergrid) at its headquarters here on Racecourse Road. A note from Powergrid said the regional centre in Bangalore would monitor and mange the entire southern region network of 3,830 km. It said Powergrid would offer telecom services to private companies at economical prices through this network. It would also provide managed network services, data centres and videoconferencing. The inauguration will take place at 4.15 p.m.

Keen contest on the cards

BANGALORE SEPT. 21. The elections to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, scheduled on Saturday, will witness a keen contest for the president's post among Basanthkumar Patil, president of the Kannada Film Producers Association; K.C.N. Chandrashekar, former president of the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce; B.K. Gangappa, former vice-president of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce; and H.D. Gangaraj, an influential distributor and Congress politician. The main contestants for the posts of three vice-presidents and three secretaries representing the production, distribution and exhibition sectors are Sa. Ra. Govindu, K. Jananakiram, G.K. Kutti, S. Shailendra Babu, Joe Simeon, Madhusudan Reddy, B.N. Gangadhar and Thomas D'Souza.

Sangha scholarships

BANGALORE SEPT. 21. Hoysala Karnataka Sangha, Bangalore, has invited scholarship applications from meritorious Brahmin students in degree and professional courses and those studying Sanskrit and the Vedas. Along with the applications, copies of marks card, study and income certificates and caste certificate issued by a recognised Brahmin organisation should be submitted. The applications must be addressed to the Secretary, Hoysala Karnataka Sangha, 3rd Cross, Hombegowdanagar, Wilson Garden, Bangalore 560 027, on or before October 10, says a press release from the sangha. Workshop

BELGAUM SEPT. 21. The Karnataka Media Academy and the Working Journalists' Associations of Ramdurg and Belgaum has organised a two-day workshop for journalists and a lecture series instituted in the name of the late Gha. Gu. Halkatti and the late C.S. Somashekhar in Ramdurg on September 25 and 26.

Murgesh Shivapuji, a member of the academy, said the Minister for Agriculture Marketing and district in-charge, Prakash Hukkeri, would inaugurate the workshop. N. Arjundev, president of the academy, would preside over the function.

Protest

CHIKMAGALUR SEPT. 21. Tension prevailed at the general hospital here following an alteration between a hospital employee and a group of people today. The employee is said to have demanded money from a patient.

C.T. Ravi, MLA, who was holding discussions with the District Surgeon, is said to have intervened and slapped the employee. He later visited the maternity hospital and gathered evidence against the employee.

The employee consumed poison as preparations were being made to suspend him. On hearing about the incident, hospital employees and members of the Dalit Sangarsh Samiti staged a protest in front of the hospital demanding action against the MLA.

CHITRADURGA SEPT. 21. A programme on the cultural facets in Vachanas of Akkamahadevi, saint-poet, will be organised here on Friday by Kannada University, Hampi, in association with Basava Kendra, Sri Murugha Math, Chitradurga.

``Akkamadevi Vachanagalu -Samskrutika Mukhamukhi'' will be inaugurated by Rajendra Chenni, critic and head of the Department of English, Kuvempu University. Amaresha Nugadoni, head of the Department of Kannada Literary Studies, Hampi, will make the introductory remarks.

Sri Shivamurthy Murugha Rajendra Sharanaru will preside over the function. He will release books on Sharana literature. K. Raghavendra Rao, litterateur, will deliver the valedictory address.

Falls to death

CHITRADURGA SEPT. 21. A man died after he fell from a bridge across the Vedavathi near Hiriyur on Sunday.

According to sources in the Police Department, the man, Dore, aged 30, was drunk at the time of the incident. He was a banana merchant in Hiriyur. The Hiriyur Police have registered a case.

ABVP protest

HASSAN SEPT. 21. Activists of the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad took out a procession here on Tuesday demanding that proper infrastructure be provided to the various junior colleges in the city. They submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner in this connection.

Grade awarded

DAVANGERE SEPT. 21. The AV Kamalamma Women's College here has been awarded B++ grade by the NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council).

Latha B. Gokhale, college principal, told presspersons here on Tuesday that the NAAC assessed the facilities at the college three months ago. She said the NAAC had written a letter awarding the college B++ grade.

Suspended

Davangere Sept. 21. A police inspector, attached to the District Armed Reserve (DAR), has been suspended for allegedly assaulting a police constable here on Monday.

The police said today that the inspector, Mallikarjunappa, assaulted the constable, Revanasiddappa, "with shoes" while on duty at the Superintendent of Police's office recently. The action was based on a complaint lodged by the victim.

Suspended

DAVANGERE SEPT. 21. A police inspector of the District Armed Reserve, Mallikarjunappa, has been suspended for allegedly assaulting a constable while on duty.

The Inspector General of Police, Eastern Range, G.M. Hayath, issued the suspension order here on Tuesday.

It is alleged that the inspector had abused the constable before assaulting the constable, Revannasiddappa.

Mr. Hayath, who sought an explanation from the inspector following a complaint from the constable, appointed the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Challakere, to conduct a detailed investigation of the incident.
