Three farmers end life

HASSAN, SEPT. 27. Three farmers — one each in Hassan, Bidar and Bijapur districts — committed suicide in the past 48 hours.

B.P. Devaraje Gowda (55), a farmer at Bettadamane village in Sakleshpur taluk of Hassan district, reportedly shot himself on Sunday. According to a complaint filed by his son, Suresh, with the Yesalur police on Monday, Devaraje Gowda had taken a loan from a cooperative bank to cultivate ginger and cardamom in his six-acre land. However, his crops failed. The Yesalur police have registered a case.

Our Bidar Staff Correspondent reports:

Chandrappa Sambanna Rekulagikar consumed pesticide in his field at Halhalli (K) village in Bhalki taluk of Bidar district on Sunday, the police said. He reportedly took the extreme step as he as unable to clear his loans. Villagers said he found it difficult to repay a loan of Rs. 60,000 as his crops had failed in the past year. He is survived by his wife and four children.

UNI adds from Bijapur:

A farmer reportedly committed suicide by consuming poison at Hadaginal village in Bijapur district today as he was unable to repay a bank loan raised for agricultural purposes.

The police said the farmer, Babugouda Basappagouda Advi (35), had taken a loan from a grameena bank.
