MADURAI, OCT. 3. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited has undertaken an epidemiological survey on the health conditions of the people residing in and around Koodankulam in Tirunelveli district where a nuclear power plant is being established with Russian collaboration. The survey is being carried out with the support of the State Health department to monitor the health status of the people. Speaking to The Hindu here today, the Chairman and Managing Director of NPCIL, S. K. Jain, said a bulk of the components such as steam supply system, generation plant, turbine generator and condenser would be erected at the site by this year-end. The Corporation had planned to complete two per cent of the work every month to complete the project ahead of 2007. Later speaking to reporters here this evening, Dr. Jain said the NPCIL was spending about Rs. 5 crores a day on an average in executing the project and from next year onwards it had been planned to spend Rs. 7 crores a day. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board had been collecting data on the project's impact on the environment and the same was being submitted to the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), he said.
