Government becoming intolerant: BJP

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, OCT. 15. The Bharatiya Janata Party has charged the Manmohan Singh Government with increasing "ideological intolerance." It cited the removal of Anupam Kher from the post of Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification and the unwillingness of Doordarshan to telecast a film on Jayaprakash Narayan because of the film's criticism of the Emergency.

In the last few days, the constituents of the United Progressive Alliance have displayed intolerance to the views of others, the BJP general secretary, Arun Jaitley, said today.

The Bihar Government has banned the display of cartoons in puja pandals — a long-followed tradition — during the Durga Puja festival. The Rashtriya Janata Dal chief and Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad, and his wife and Chief Minister, Rabri Devi, do not have the ability to laugh at themselves or let others laugh at them, he added.

`A cover-up'

Mr. Jaitley charged the Punjab Chief Minister, Amrinder Singh, with trying to "gag" the media "to cover up cases related to his own corruption."

"These are dangerous times,'' he said and expressed the hope that democratic and independent institutions such as the media would read the signals correctly and take corrective action.
