KANNUR, OCT. 15. There were heartbreaks for the Kannur boys and the big crowd that came to cheer them. The host failed yet again to clear the last hurdle at the South Zone inter-university football championship, going down to Bangalore in extra time after leading 2-0 in the last of the four quarterfinals at the Police Parade Ground here on Friday. With the 3-2 win Bangalore qualified for the all-India championship, to be held at Amaravati (Maharashtra) from October 30. The defending all-India and South Zone champion Annamalai, which defeated MG 3-0, Calicut, a 4-0 winner against MS, Thirunelveli, and Kerala, which edged out Madras 1-0, have also qualified. All these four teams had made the grade from the zone last year too and therefore were seeded directly to the last eight here. P.C. Riju and B. Sajeesh put Kannur ahead. Jayavandan, Khalander (2) scored foe Bangalore Calicut, the most successful side in the history of the competition, opened its campaign with a fluent win, as Sijo Paul (48th minute), T. Shabeer Ali (50th), P.A. Ferose (55th), and Nisthar Ali (86th) found the target. For Kerala, Ratheesh scored the winner in the 73rd minute. Ramesh (47th and 80th) and Shyju (57th) were the scorers for Annamalai. The semifinal league will start on Sunday, after a day's rest.
