South Zone hockey from today

HYDERABAD, OCT. 16. The three-day South Zone women's hockey championship will be held at Gachibowli near here on Astro-turf from October 17, according to Mr Ravichandra Prasad, organising secretary. Mr Prasad informed that defending champions, Karnata, pulled out of the event leaving only the hosts Andhra, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The tournament will be played on round-robin league format.

In the inaugural match on Sunday Andhra will take on Kerala. Dronacharya M.K.Kaushik will inaugurate.

Mr. Ravi Raju, secretary of East Godavari Hockey Association, said they were allotted the event but preferred to host the championship on astro-turf to give the players a feel of the facilities available in Hyderabad and also to have a chance to see the Indian probables undergoing the preparatory camp ahead of the Junior Asia Cup at the same venue from Oct. 30.

Mr. Raju informed that to promote the game in a big way, they had scouted 40 tribal girls and that they would be given 15-day coaching at Kakinada.

"We are also planning to take them back to their respective areas to lure more young talent to the sport," he added.
