Reserve site sold

Sir - I am a resident of VNR Nagar, Vadavalli Panchayat. The reserve site/public purpose site at 16th Street VNR Nagar has been sold unauthorisedly. The same is being occupied with illegal approval from the Vadavalli Panchayat which has also sanctioned electricity connection.

The Collector should immediately take steps to evict the illegal occupants and retrieve the public property.

The panchayat has also given power connection for running a factory on the 16th Street, which causes disturbance to nearby residents. The Collector should look into the matter at the earliest.

Passbooks not updated

Sir - There are over 2,500 Central and State Government pensioners drawing pension from the Canara Bank branch at Aruvankadu in the Nilgiris district.

The Central Government pensioners have complained that their passbook when tendered for withdrawal is not being updated. Hence, many are unaware of the balance amount.

A request in this connection was made by the All India Association of Central Government Pensioners to the Aruvankadu branch in July 2003, but in vain. Thereafter, a reference in the matter was made to the Circle Office at Madurai endorsing a copy of the same to the Canara Bank Head Office at Bangalore requesting to advise the branch regarding updating. The HO referred the matter to the Circle Office for necessary action.

The latter intimated that non-updating of passbooks at Aruvankadu branch was because the branch was under switch over process: - from one system of computerisation to another better system.

It was assured that the branch was into the new system and there would be prompt service in future.

Though it is more than six months things have not improved. Our further references to the Circle Office and Head Office of Canara Bank about the inaction evoked no response.

Account transfer

Sir - While almost all the senior citizens welcome the newly introduced saving scheme with nine per cent interest, the system of paying/crediting of accrued interest on quarterly basis is not very helpful since almost all the bills are paid on monthly basis.

Hence, there is a need to change the mode of interest payment/crediting at monthly rests, as it is available under the PO monthly income scheme. This facility will add to the convenience of the senior citizens.

Since the scheme will be operated by all nationalised banks from November account holders under the Senior Citizens Savings Scheme may be permitted to transfer the account to any public section bank/s without the penalty.

This will ease the present workload at the post office.

An unseemly obstacle

Sir - Nowadays two-wheeler riding becomes tedious on roads. Amid the heavy traffic, the riders have to be cautious of the speed breakers, which are abundant on the main road.

Especially, the rider passing by the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University have to undergo a jerking ride due to a speed-breaker.

It is certain that the riders would suffer back pain in due course. It is baffling how the highways department allowed such an unspecified speed breaker on the road.

Will the department look into the matter?

No name board

Sir - Podanur is a railway junction through which many express and passenger trains such as Malabar Mail, Alleppey Express, West Coast Express and Madurai Express pass through.

People bound for Chennai and Mangalore have to come to Podanur to board the Express trains that skip Coimbatore Junction.

In the absence of a name board indicating the name and location of the station, public find it difficult to reach the place.

The problem is aggravated more in the night as West Coast Express comes at an odd hour.

Hence, a proper name board indicating the name of the station in bold letters may be exhibited in a conspicuous location with proper lighting by the Railway authorities.

Keep streetlights burning

Sir - Marudhamalai Road used to be a paradise for early morning walkers when there is not much traffic. However, the streetlights are invariably not switched on particularly during new moon days.

Will the authorities ensure that the streetlights are switched on till 6 a.m. considering the long hours of nights in the coming winter months?

C.R. Narayanaswamy,

Down the drain

Sir - We have a problem in keeping our cities clean. The Corporation cannot cope, the public is indifferent and to make matters worse political parties hold massive rallies and for weeks thereafter party flags, made of plastic, litter the roads.

The flags would ultimately find their way into drain and sewers and choke them.

Surely our leaders understand this and it would be to their credit if they issue a fiat to their party functionaries banning the use of plastic flags.
