MOSCOW, NOV. 2. Russia successfully test-fired two ballistic missiles on Tuesday, launching one from a nuclear submarine and the other from a mainland spaceport. The RS-12M Topol missile fired from the Plisetsk space-launching facility in Russia's north hit a target on the peninsula in the Russian Far East, about 6,700 km east of Moscow, the Strategic Missile Forces said in a statement. In another test launch today, the St. George nuclear submarine fired a ballistic missile from under water in the opposite direction, from the Sea of Okhotsk in the Far East to a test range on Novaya Zemlya island in northern Russia. The missile also hit a set target, the navy said in a statement. The missile tests curiously coincided with the presidential election in the United States, but the military said the launches had nothing to do with politics. AP reports: Sources said the tests were part of an effort to test the possible extension of the service life of the Soviet-built ballistic missiles. It said the Topol missile has been on duty since 1985, more than twice as long as its originally designated lifetime.
