BJP's national executive to meet in Ranchi

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, NOV. 3 . The first national executive committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the current tenure of the party president, L.K. Advani, is to be held in Ranchi for three days from November 24.

The capital of Jharkhand has been chosen as the venue since elections are due in the State early next year.

It was announced by the party today that the first meeting of its newly-appointed office-bearers would meet on November 10, when, among other issues, the agenda of the national executive could also be discussed. After consulting his colleagues, Mr. Advani is expected to allocate work to senior colleagues.

At the moment, the overall charge of Bihar is with the general secretary, Arun Jaitley, while Jharkhand is the responsibility of the general secretary, Rajnath Singh. It remains to be seen whether Mr. Advani will make any changes or not, but indications are that Mr. Jaitley and Mr. Singh will not be disturbed.

Some of the issues that are expected to be taken up by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's working committee meeting in Haridwar on November 5 and 6 are also expected to figure in the BJP's national executive meeting. "Infiltration" from Bangladesh and strong criticism of the Manmohan Singh Government's handling of internal security issues are high on the agenda of the RSS as well as the BJP.

Of the three States where Assembly elections are scheduled in February next year — Bihar, Jharkhand and Haryana — the BJP's stakes are highest in Jharkhand, as it is the ruling party there. In Bihar, it will be the junior partner in the alliance with the Janata Dal (United) and, in Haryana, its prospects are rather bleak. Ranchi has been chosen as the venue for the national executive committee meeting to give a higher profile to the party and its leaders ahead of elections.
