Roddick, Safin in third round

PARIS, NOV. 4. Quickfire Andy Roddick and marathon man Marat Safin sprinkled a little stardust over the beleaguered Paris Masters as the American and Russian crowd-pullers raced into the third round of the 2.45-million-euro tournament.

Roddick, top-seeded in the absence of world number one Roger Federer, brushed aside Armenia's Sargis Sargsian 6-2, 6-2 in just 51 minutes on Wednesday to advance to the third round.

With five of the world's top ten skipping this event, including Federer and Andre Agassi, the organisers were praying that Roddick and Safin did not fall by the wayside.

Safin kept his part of the bargain, as well as the lid on his time-bomb temper, to ensure his campaign for a third Paris title stayed on course with a battling 6-7(1), 6-3, 7-5 victory over Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic.
