Tamil Nadu wins title

By Our Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM, NOV. 4. Tamil Nadu won the Polly Umrigar Trophy South Zone under-15 cricket tournament (for the P. Krishnamurthy Trophy), beating Kerala by an innings and 93 runs on Thursday, the second day of the last round-robin match at the Ukku Stadium here.

The team was well placed on the points table before the start of this match but the leg-spinner Kaushik Gandhi, who was consistently performing well, made sure that the team scored an outright win. He followed up his six-wicket haul in the first innings with a five-wicket haul in the second to dismiss Kerala for 43 runs.

Five points from the win took last year's third-placed team Tamil Nadu's points tally to 16 and assured it of the title. The runner-up spot was likely to be decided through the run-quotient, between last year's winner, Karnataka and runner-up Andhra.

Karnataka gained a huge first-innings lead of 227 over Goa at the Port Stadium. Pavan U.Deshpande (72) and Hardik H. Munoth (66) put on 94 runs for the seventh wicket for Karnataka. Hardik on the first day claimed six wicket to restrict Goa to 111. Goa was on the brink of defeat as it lost four wickets for 44 runs at draw of stumps on the second day. Naveen picked two of the wickets that fell.

Andhra faced the prospect of losing the first innings lead to Hyderabad at the ACA-VDCA Stadium, with the latter scoring 116 for two in reply to former's total of 150. A win for Karnataka and no points for Andhra from their last matches will tie them with nine points each.

The scores:

Kerala 107 and 43 in 25.3 overs (Kaushik Gandhi five for 28, Dharmin T. Shah four for six ) lost to Tamil Nadu 243 for eight decl. in 65 overs (L. Surya Prakash 65, Praveen Srivatsan 45, Abhinav Mukund 25, N.K. Arya three for 83).

Goa 111 and 44 for four vs Karnataka 338 for eight decl. in 104 overs (Pavan U. Deshpande 72, Hardik K. Munoth 66, Ajith U. Shenoy 57, Sanjay Kumar 47, Abrar Kazi 41).

Andhra 150 vs Hyderabad 116 for two in 90 overs (V. Sandeep Rajan 38).
