RANCHI, NOV. 6. Barring stray altercations, the dawn-to-dusk bandh in Jharkhand passed peacefully today. The ruling BJP in the Statecalled a statewide bandh to protest against the hike in petroleum price by the Government. According to the police here, about 2000 people were arrested in different parts of the State. They were released in the evening. The maximum number of persons 1,170 were arrested in the Chief Minister, Arjun Munda's district of Jamshedpur, while 211 people were arrested in Ranchi for disturbing law and order. Official sources said that train services in the State were disrupted during the early hours of the day. The Rajdhani Express and the Lokmanya Tilak Express were stopped at the Hatia and Dhanbad stations. Public carriers and State-owned long-distance buses were not allowed to ply. Private vehicles also stayed off the roads, people remained indoors and commercial hubs were reported to wear a deserted look. Attendance in the Government offices was hardly affected and production in the different collieries of the Coal India Limited subsidiaries in the State remained normal, though coal dispatches could not take place.
