TIRUCHI, NOV. 20. The failure of the IT industry to take off in the city despite its much touted potential was the focus of discussion at the conference on "Business Opportunities in Information Technology Enabled Services and Business Process Outsourcing" hosted by the Tiruchi Zone of the Confederation of Indian Industry here today. Inaugurating the meet, K. Meena, syndicate member, Bharathidasan University, called for closer coordination between industry and the educational institutions. New programmes covering the latest developments in IT could be introduced in the curriculum based on the requirements and suggestions of the industry. It was essential for students to prepare themselves adequately to meet the requirements of the business process outsourcing units. Organisations such as the CII had a major role in promoting the industry.
Workshop
Dr. Meena said the local branch of the Computer Society of India, the CSI Women Students branch of Shrimathi Indira Gandhi College, the Internet Users Club of Tiruchi, the Tiruchi Information Technology Association and the BHEL Small Scale Industries Association would jointly organise a workshop on industry-institution interaction here in December. P.V. Kannan, chairman, CII, Tiruchi Zone, described the BPO sector as a high growth area. The past chairman of CII, Tiruchi Zone, N.P. Sukumar, said the CII had initiated several measures to promote the sector a few years ago and several entrepreneurs had evinced a keen interest to start business. Even fabrication units thought of diversifying into the sector. However, the lack of an earth station and connectivity problems were the main hurdles. However, when the earth station was set up, there were hardly any takers for bandwidth. Entrepreneurs failed to show a proper understanding of the dynamics of the industry. Though the institutions in and around the city were throwing up about 25,000 IT graduates each year, there was a need to improve the quality of output. Good communication skills were essential for the industry, he added. Industry representatives elaborated on the various aspects of IT-enabled services and BPO operations.
