CHENNAI, NOV. 24. After the Sprints and Jumps academy in Madurai and the Throws academy in Dindigul, the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadun (SDAT) now proposes to launch a `SDAT-Middle distance academy' in its endeavour to impart greater professionalism in specialised areas in athletics. In an effort to pick the talent for this proposed academy, the SDAT has identified 155 boys and 12 girls on the basis of performances in the district-level competitions, basically in 100m, 400m and 1000m events. They are undergoing a five-day coaching camp-cum-selection trials at the Nehru stadium here since November 22, where their performances are being assessed on the basis of the norms provided by the International Amateur Athletic Federation. The parameters being tested are cardio vascular capacity, endurance, agility and speed. As with various schemes launched earlier, the present academy was being started with a long term plan in place, according to the SDAT Member Secretary, P.W.C. Davidar, who said that the good response from the state encouraged them.
