NEW DELHI, NOV. 30. The BJP spokesperson, Sushma Swaraj, today charged the Tamil Nadu Government with "violating the Constitution" by "misusing the Government machinery" to "tarnish the image and destroy the reputation" of the ancient Kanchi Mutt and its head, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi. The Centre, she said, had all this while "watched the tamasha" from the sidelines. It was time it acted and sent directions to the State under Articles 256 and 257 of the Constitution. Ms. Swaraj described the Acharya's alleged "confessional statement" as a "total lie." She said the case "was no longer a murder case against an individual" but had become a "matter of state assault on a highly respected religious institution." "The State Government was bent on destroying the largest and most respected Hindu organisation, and if this is the case, the [State] Government is not functioning according to the Constitution." She demanded that the Union Law Minister "demand a copy of the tape" and "see for himself." If there was such a tape, it should be made public. "Let the truth be known," she added.
