Inter-ministerial group on child health planned

By Our Staff Correspondent

NEW DELHI, NOV. 30. The Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Anbumani Ramadoss, today announced that an inter-ministerial group would be set up to foster collaboration between the Integrated Child Development Schemes and the Reproductive and Child Health Mission (RCH)-II for bringing down the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) and the Neonatal Mortality Rate (NMR).

A Government-led formal mechanism of national and international partners, committed to child survival, will also be established in the form of a Child Survival Partnership (CSP) cell to follow up coordinated work.

Speaking at the conclusion of a two-day conference for `Child Survival and Development' organised by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Mr. Ramadoss said the recommendations of the conference would be communicated to the Planning Commission before December 9 for contribution to the mid-term appraisal.

He said the proposal for the inter-ministerial group was ready and would be shortly placed before the Union Cabinet for approval. The group will ask the States to pool a portion of their resources for joint planning and implementation in a coordinated way. For filling up the gap between knowledge and practice, a set of key behavioural goals and results will be identified by March 2005.
