The death of a landmark
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI,
DEC. 17.
Many years ago, the mansion on Radhakrishnan Road, adjacent to the Music Academy, was the residence of S. S. Vasan, the founder of Gemini Pictures. That was an era when film-goers would find the experience of watching movies incomplete without the sound of the Gemini bugle.
Historians note that the place was a treat to visit during Navarathri. "Set designers would imaginatively recreate little brooks and thatch huts to depict Panchavati as it was described in the Ramayana," writer Padmini Natarajan records it in her website.
Until a few days back, it was home to many set assistants, assistant directors, production assistants and lightmen, as film technicians wrapped up a quick schedule of shooting at the bungalow.
The house, shorn of its trees and bushes, also provided the ambience and the leisurely backdrop for many TV serials.
Piles of debris amidst the half demolished house is all that remains today.
All that remains for the film industry now are just fond memories of a glorious era of Gemini.
