Effluent treatment plants aim at `zero discharge'
By Our Staff Reporter
COIMBATORE,
DEC. 17.
Six common effluent treatment plants (CETPs) in Tirupur are preparing a joint project for achieving "zero discharge".
The Deputy Director of the Office of the Textile Commissioner, Ram Asrey Lal, told presspersons here today that under the Textile Cluster Infrastructure Development Scheme, about Rs.15 crores was available (for 2004-2005) to be disbursed as grant for infrastructure development projects in various textile clusters in the country.
So far, five projects have been approved and this included the one for setting up of windmills in Tirupur. Eleven more projects have been submitted to the Union Ministry of Textiles for approval by the respective implementing agencies.
A maximum of Rs. 20 crores could be given as grant for a project and this would be on a reimbursement basis.
In Tamil Nadu, at least three more proposals for assistance (all for CETPs) are being prepared.
However, since the scheme was intended to benefit units in a cluster, it was suggested to the CETPs in Tirupur that they could submit a joint proposal under the scheme for setting up facilities to achieve "zero discharge" of treated effluents. Though the CETPs could set up the required infrastructure at their respective areas, it could be taken up by a single implementing agency.
