Judicial custody of 8 accused extended
By Our Staff Reporter
KANCHEEPURAM,
DEC.17.
The Kancheepuram Judicial Magistrate-I, G. Uthamaraj, today extended the judicial custody of eight persons, arrested in connection with the Sankararaman murder case, up to December 31.
When the remand prisoners sought the Magistrate's permission to make an oral submission about the `ordeal' faced by them in judicial custody, Mr.Uthamaraj directed them to submit their grievances in writing.
The remand prisoners pointed out that though the Magistrate had directed two of them, `mattu' Basker and Stalin to submit written statements about their grievances when they made a plea on December 3 to allow them to make a submission in open court, neither the prison authorities nor the police personnel who brought them to the court extended help.
The prisoners claimed that since the prison authorities did not allow their counsel to meet them in prison, they were not in a position to fulfil the court's alternative direction of filing their statements through the lawyers. Stalin alleged that the prison authorities threatened them that they would be shifted to the punishment cell if they tried to make an oral submission or demand paper and pen to prepare statements.
