Bring water to Hogenakkal through open canal: Vasan

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, DEC. 17. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, G.K. Vasan, has urged the State Government to consider bringing Cauvery water from Hogenakkal through open canal for drinking water supply in Chennai.

In a statement here today, technical experts were of the opinion that the scheme would be the best solution to the recurring drinking water crisis in the city. By bringing water through open canal, drinking water could be provided to wayside towns and villages also.

Mr.Vasan criticised the Chief Minister for her efforts to tap water at Coleroon bed in Perambalur district which, he feared, would affect the ground water level besides affecting irrigation requirements of local farmers. Instead of experimenting on schemes that would affect the local people, the Government should think of a project that would not in any way affect their interest of local people, he added.
