`No defence pact with Sri Lanka'
By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUCHI,
DEC. 17.
The MDMK presidium chairman, L. Ganesan, today affirmed that the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, had assured him that the Centre has not entered into any defence agreement with Sri Lanka, especially for supporting the expansion of the Palaly Air Base, as reported in some sections of the media.
Mr. Ganesan told reporters here today that he had raised the issue at the United Progressive Alliance meeting recently and pointed out that the air base was used only for defence purposes and not for civil air transport.
In the MDMK's perception, the Sri Lankan President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, was preparing "for a confrontation after sabotaging the peace talks." In this scenario, the expansion of the air base would only be detrimental to the interests of the Tamils in Jaffna, he said.
Responding to the party's concerns, both the Prime Minister and the Defence Minister have clarified that the Centre has not entered into any such defence pact with Sri Lanka during the Ms. Kumaratunga's recent visit to the country, he said.
