Demonstration
PERAMBALUR DEC. 17 . Members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India, All India Democratic Women's Association and Students Federation of India staged a demonstration here today, condemning what they called `false cases' foisted against lawyers and others. Led by the State president of the DYFI, S. K. Mahendran, MLA, they took out a procession. They wanted two Plus-Two students, who were dismissed from the Government Higher Secondary School here, to be re-admitted. The district secretary of the AIDWA, P. Tamizharasi, the State deputy secretary of the DYFI, S.G. Ramesh Babu, and the district secretary of the SFI, Vaduganathan, spoke.
Dak Adalat
TIRUCHI DEC. 17. The Postal Department will conduct the Dak Adalat at 5 p.m. on December 27, at the office of the Superintendent of Post Offices of the Srirangam division. The Superintendent of the Post Offices of the Division, L. Manickam will chair the adalat.
Lok Adalat
Thanjavur Dec.17. Indian Bank conducted a Lok Adalat here covering 304 non-performing assets. About 76 borrowers turned up. In all, 54 cases amounting to Rs. 11,65,966 were settled. Spot recoveries to the tune of Rs. 1,19,362 were made. Ravi, Sub-Judge, presided. The jury included Arumugam, Sub-Judge, (retired). AR.Arunachalam, Chief Manager, Indian Bank, Thanjavur circle, was present, says K. Srinivasan, circle head, in a press release.
Discourse
NAGAPATTINAM DEC.17. The Chinmaya Mission here has organised a special discourse on the meaning and significance of the `Gayatri mantra and japam' at D.B.G.Kalyana Mandapam here from 6.30 a.m. to 8.30 a.m. on Sunday. Brahmachari Rishi Chaitanya of the Chinmaya Mission said today that there would be teaching and mass chanting of Gayatri mantra and over 500 were expected to participate in the event.
Mettur level
Tiruchi Dec.17. The water level at the Mettur reservoir stood at 92.04 feet today. The inflow was 1,837 cusecs and the discharge 10,000 cusecs.
Hunt for four lorry drivers
NAGERCOIL DEC. 17. The police are on the look-out for four lorry drivers and others for trying to hit officials of the Revenue department when they stopped the vehicles to prevent illegal sand mining from the Tamirabarani today. The police said the Revenue Inspector of Painkulam near Vilavancode, Vasantha Rajan, checked vehicles at Karichavilai Kadavu near Kallikkavilai. When he tried to stop two sand-laden lorries, the drivers tired to hit him. As the officials chased the lorries, the drivers abandoned their vehicles and escaped. The Village Administrative Officer of Pacode, Vasantha, and her assistant, Jeyamani, tired to stop two sand-laden lorries on the banks of the Tamirabarani near Pacode. The drivers tried to hit them. When a police team chased the vehicles, they escaped, abandoning their vehicles.
Demonstration
CHENNAI DEC. 17 . The administrative employees of Prasar Bharati, owing allegiance to the Tamil Nadu zonal council of Akashvani and Doordarshan Administrative Staff Association, staged a dharna on the All- India Radio premises here today, demanding that there be no discrimination in granting wage increase. Around 300 employees took part in the protest, the zonal secretary, S. Sriraman, said in a statement.
Christmas special trains
CHENNAI DEC. 17 . In connection with the Christmas, Southern Railway will operate the following special trains: Train-633 Chennai Central-Thiruvananthapuram Superfast special will leave here at 8 a.m. on December 23 and reach Thiruvananthapuram at 11.30 p.m. the same day; train-207 Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai-Guwahati Special will leave Thiruvananthapuram at 4.05 p.m. on January 3, arrive at the Chennai Central at 9.35 a.m. It will leave here at 10 a.m. on January 4 and reach Guwahati at 2.30 p.m. on January 6. Reservation will begin on December 18, according to a railway release.
m.v. Cape Kestrel at Chennai port
CHENNAI DEC. 17. The Chennai Port today received m.v. Cape Kestrel, the highest capacity vessel, which berthed at the Bharathi Dock-II to load 1.44 lakh tonnes of iron ore. An official release said the consignment was exported by the Minerals and Metals Trading Corporation (MMTC), a Government of India undertaking, to M/s. Posco, Korea. The previous highest capacity vessel that called at the port was M.V.Anemone, carrying a load of 1.41 lakh tonnes, in August 1991.
Minorities panel reconstituted
CHENNAI DEC. 17 . The State Minorities Commission has been reconstituted. M. Prakash will be the chairman and T. Kamal Sheriff, vice-chairman. Harish L. Mehta, Dinshaw Parakh and M. Ramesh Kumar Lamba will be the members. The committee will have a three-year term.
Utility tug inducted into Navy
CHENNAI DEC. 17. A harbour utility tug was inducted into the Navy by Vice-Admiral, J.S. Bedi, Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition, at a function held here today. Accepting the tug from the manufacturers, Tebma Shipyards, Mr. Bedi said it was the last vessel in the series of five for which the contract was awarded to the company and it would be the ninth tug for the Navy. The new tug would be used in the Visakapattinam navy yard. The Tebma Shipyards Managing Director, P.K. Balan, said the tug was a highly manoeuvrable vessel, which could handle large vessels in the restricted harbour area, as it was provided with the state-of-the-art technique. It was handed over to the Navy five months ahead of schedule.
Naga students' tour
CHENNAI DEC. 17. A team of 20 students from Nagaland will be on a two-day tour of Chennai from December 19, as part of the Army's Operation Sadhbhavna, aimed at "winning the hearts of the Naga people." The students will visit the Fort Museum, the Officers Training Academy and an amusement park. En route, they halted in Kolkotta, Bangalore, Mysore and Udhagamandalam. The tour has been organised by the Ministries of Defence and Home.
