`Promote classical music, dance'
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI,
DEC. 19.
Speakers at a meeting here on Saturday to mark the beginning of the 8th Annual Music Festival of the Sri Rama Bhaktha Jana Samaj stressed the need for supporting efforts to promote classical music and dance.
Educationist Mrs.Y.G. Parthasarathi, said it was not sufficient to encourage young musicians and artistes but steps must be taken to draw more youngsters towards appreciating classical art forms, as rasikas should not be confined to the '40-plus' age group.
She appealed to parents to bring their children to music festivals, as the younger generation had to be weaned away from the mobile phone culture and tasteless film songs. The music festivals would contribute in a big way to preservation of the age-old Indian culture, she said.
The festival was inaugurated by P.Obul Reddy, industrialist, who conferred the "Sangeetha Kala Seva Rathna" award on Mrs. Parthasarathy and the "Dr. M.A.M. Ramasamy Sangeetha Maamani" award on Saxophone maestro, Kadri Gopalnath. The awardees were felicitated by T.R.Subramaniam and K.S. Mahadevan.
