Drowned
ERODE DEC. 19. A fisherman drowned in the Anthiyur Big Tank on Saturday. According to the police, Jayavelu (40), residing in Anthiyur Fishermen Street, had gone to the tank to bathe. When he was swimming in the tank, he got caught in the thorny bushes and drowned. The Fire and Rescue Service personnel, who rushed to the spot, removed the body from the bushes.
Court complex
ERODE DEC. 19. An integrated court complex would be constructed in Bhavani soon, the Principal District Judge, Erode, R. Mohandoss, said. He was addressing lawyers in Bhavani on Saturday after reviewing the works in the courts. Land had been purchased for the purpose. After getting funds from the Government, the complex would be constructed, he added.
Fined
ERODE DEC. 19. The Gobichettipalayam Sub-Collector, S. Samayamurthy, fined a lorry owner for transporting sand quarried illegally. The lorry was seized near Nagadevanpalayam, Gobi. After enquiry, the Sub-Collector ordered the lorry owner to pay a fine of Rs. 26,340. After paying the fine, the lorry with sand was released.
EB wires stolen
TUTICORIN DEC.19. Unidentified persons have stolen about 650 metres of aluminum wire belong to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board from Pudur recently. On a complaint from P Arumugasamy, Assistant Engineer, TNEB, police are investigating.
Thief held
TUTICORIN DEC.19. The Arumuganeri police today arrested one Sundaram (60) for his alleged involvement in cycle theft cases that took place in the district during the last few days. The accused had stolen the cycle of one Srinivasan ( 50) of L R Nagar Layout , falling under Arumuganeri police station limits, and that of Chinnasamy (55) of Kulasekarapattinam.
Theft at IMFL
retail outlet
TUTICORIN DEC.19. Burglars broke open a IMFL retail outlet run by the TASMAC at Kovilpatti on Friday and stole cash kept there. On a complaint from the supervisor of the shop, Nagarajan, Kovilpatti West police registered a case and are investigating.
Demonstration
TUTICORIN DEC.19. About 60 teachers, including 17 women teachers, of various government primary schools staged a demonstration today in front of the Collectorate here, demanding the authorities to fill the teacher posts lying vacant.
`Reinstate road workers'
CHENNAI DEC. 19. A life of penury and delay by the State Government in taking them back into service, despite a Madras High Court ruling in their favour, forced road workers to commit suicide, according to the Tamilnadu Government Employees Union. Stating that 40 of the 10,000 road workers, whose services were terminated, have allegedly committed suicide, the TNGEU has appealed to the Government to reinstate them immediately. The Government should deem it as a social problem and give them back their jobs, a union release said. Condoling with the death of Arumugam, a road worker who allegedly committed suicide in Tindivanam, the union urged the terminated employees not to resort to such extreme steps.
Wives plan to send postcards
TIRUNELVELI DEC. 19. Piqued at the delay in reinstating their husbands even after the Madras High Court ruling, wives of dismissed road workers have decided to send postcards to the Chief Minister, J. Jayalalithaa, on January 1. A decision to this effect was taken at the state executive committee meeting of the road workers held here today. The meeting demanded the Government to give-up its efforts to file an appeal before the Supreme Court following the Madras High Court order asking the Government to reinstate the dismissed road workers. The workers would participate in large numbers in a protest rally scheduled for January 6 and conduct conferences at the district headquarters from January 17.
Pilgrim dies after heart attack
PATHANAMTHITTA DEC 19. A 51-year-old pilgrim , R.Perumal of Salem Chinna-Tirupati in Tamil Nadu, died after a heart attack at the Sannidhanam at Sabarimala today. According to Health department sources, Perumal developed severe chest pain while climbing the Appachimedu. He was rushed to the Sree Ayyappa Health Amenitities Society Cardiology Centre at Sannidhanam where he was declared dead. Perumal was the 14th pilgrim to die after a heart attack during this pilgrim season. The body was taken to Salem.
Two students drowned
UDUMALPET Dec. 19. Two students were drowned in the Amaravathy Canal, at Kannaadiputhur, near Madathukulam today. Sashikumar (18) of Udhagamadalam and Lakshminarayanan (18) of Udumalpet, first year students of a private polytechnic college here, along with their friends, went for swimming in the canal. When one of them was injured after dashing against a rock, another went to his rescue. Both of them were drowned. The bodies were recovered by the fire and rescue service personnel.
2 held in Arivazhagan case
PERAMBALUR DEC. 19. Ten persons, including a former activist of the banned Tamil Nadu Liberation Army (TNLA), and an office-bearer of the Paatali Makkal Katchi (PMK) have been arrested in the last couple of days in connection with the murder of the former member of the TNLA, Arivazhagan, near Jayamkondam on December 11. The police gave their names as A. Karuppiah (29), R. Sivasubramanian (20), Maria Ponnusamy alias Doss (38), T. Dhavaseelan (40), S. Anandan alias Dhanusu (34), G. Shankar (27), M. Thangaraj (27), K. Mani (24), R. Thirisangu (28), former activist of the TNLA and P. Ramachandran (32), Andimadam PMK union secretary. The police have so far taken into custody 12 persons in connection with the murder and are on the lookout for one more.
Fishing nets destroyed
Ramanathapuram Dec. 19. Sri Lankan Navy allegedly destroyed nets and other equipment of a boat belonging to Rameswaram for entering Sri Lankan waters last night. But the boat returned to the shore safely. A mechanised boat belonging to Thankatchimadam sank in the sea near Katchathivu last night. According to sources, the boat developed a technical snag, when a group of fishermen was fishing in the mid sea. However, the fishermen returned on another boat.
Ramasamy dead
Ramanathapuram DEC.19. The former Tamil Nadu Minister, T. Ramasamy, died in the government hospital here today following kidney failure. He was 69 and is survived by his wife Vairam and five sons. Mr. Ramasamy represented Ramanathapuram constituency in the Assembly in 1977, 1980 and 1984. He served as a Minister of Commercial Taxes in the M.G.Ramachandran Cabinet from 1984 to 1988. Later, he joined the MGR Kazhagam led by R.M. Veerappan.
Three killed in road accident
MADURAI DEC. 19. Three persons were killed in a road accident near Aviyur in Virudhunagar district today. According to police sources, the driver proceeding to Salem from Tiruchendur lost control of the van and rammed it into a roadside tree at Kadabankulam. Before hitting the tree, the vehicle ran over a boy, Ramar (13), who was walking on the road. While Ramar and Gopi (35) died on way to the hospital, Chinnasamy (50), who was among the seven persons admitted to a private hospital, died soon after admission. The Aviyur police have registered a case.
