Packaged water units seek transparency in norms
By Our Staff Reporter
MADURAI,
DEC.19
. The packaged drinking water unit manufacturers who have obtained the Bureau of Indian Standards certification have urged the Centre and State to standardise prices and ensure transparency in norms.
Announcing formation of Indian Institute of Drinking Water Management Services (IIDWMS) (as a non governmental organisation) to train entrepreneurs, Francis Bastiyan, trustee, said the BIS norms were unclear and hampered the functioning of the units. Mr. Bastiyan said that there were over 1,300 small-scale units producing the packaged water in the country and 334 licensed units were in Tamil Nadu.
R. Ravishankar, another trustee, alleged that the department had "informally" asked units to stop sale through sachets/jerry cans.
The Government had stressedthe need to pack water in bubble top cans made of polycarbonate (PC) and polyethylene tetraphthalate (PET) material, he said adding that the licence to sell these raw materials was with a corporate major.
