Gurus, disciples praise Valayapatti Subramaniam

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, DEC. 19. A host of speakers led by the Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, commended the veteran thavil exponent, Valayapatti A. R. Subramaniam, for his contribution to Carnatic music.

Through his contribution spanning over five decades, Mr. Subramaniam had earned a special place in the world of music.

Leading artistes such as Palghat Mani Iyer and M. S. Subbulakshmi had held him in high esteem.

Mr. Chidambaram, who pointed out that Mr. Subramaniam was from his district, said the musician, despite having several accomplishments to his credit, remained a humble person. His concerts along with Thiruvizha Jayashankar (nagaswaram) and Kunnakudi R. Vaidyanathan (violin) had now become legendary.

"Today, on completion of 50 years of service to the music, his guru Mannargudi M. N. Rajagopal Pillai praised him and his disciples also honoured him. What else does a musician need," Mr. Chidambaram remarked while inaugurating the 10th music festival organised by Valayapatti Naadhalaya.

Award for N. Ramani

The Union Minister gave away the "Naadhalaya Sironmani" award to N. Ramani, flute maestro; the "Madurai Somu" memorial award to N. Krishnamurthy, secretary of Parthasarathyswamy Sabha; and the "Valayapatti" award to Hariharan, Ghazal singer.

Mr. Rajagopal Pillai said he was proud that his "sishya" had set standards for others to follow with regard to playing the thavil.

Dr. Ramani and Mr. Jayashankar recalled their association with Mr. Subramaniam and his devotion to the music.

Mr. Subramaniam called on connoisseurs of music to accord prominence to artistes specialising in instruments such as nagaswaram.

Kaashyap Mahesh (vocal) and K.P. Nandhini (violin) were given "promising child artiste" awards while R. Vasudevan (nagaswaram) and M. Rajaraman (thavil) received scholarships.
