`Unaided colleges should be allowed to decide fee structure'

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, DEC. 19. The All India Medical and Engineering Association, whose president, T.D. Naidu, participated in a meeting called last week by the Union Human Resources Development Ministry, wants a policy that would allow unaided colleges to decide their own fee structure.

Mr. Naidu said two all-India level entrance examinations could be allowed — one the All India Engineering Entrance Examination conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education and another to fill the management quota seats to be conducted by one association on behalf of all self-financing institutions in the country.

Mr. Naidu suggested that admission norms to Government quota should be decided by the respective State Governments in terms of quantum, minimum qualification and reservation policy. Individual institutions, he said, should have unlimited freedom to admit students for the management quota seats because this quota was the key for the survival of unaided colleges.
