TIRUPUR, DEC. 19. The Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary, Pramod Mahajan, said today that a uniform civil code would be the "right step in the right direction of keeping India in the hands of the Hindus." Speaking at the Hindu society protection conference here, he said that after the arrest of the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, the phrase, "all are equal before the law" became popular in the country. "If all are equal before the criminal law, why do people suddenly start developing cold feet when it comes to the question of uniform civil code," he asked. The BJP leader urged the Centre to evolve a national family planning policy, which must be the same for everyone.
`Silent invasion'
Speaking on demographic "aggression" from Bangladesh, Mr. Mahajan termed it as a "silent invasion" and an "undeclared war." While his party won seats in parts of Maharastra during the Assembly elections, it lost in Mumbai owing to "millions of Bangladeshis becoming voters." Mr. Mahajan said that the first and foremost thing to save India was initially to bring down the infiltration from Bangladesh to zero level and finally deport all those who were living here illegally. Demographic changes in India were not an imaginary threat, but it was real, he said. The BJP leader, Bandaru Dattatreya, criticised the Tamil Nadu Government for the arrest of Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, in the Sankararaman murder case. The arrest and the treatment meted out to the Acharya, was not an insult not just to him, but to crores of Hindus.
