CHENNAI, DEC. 19. The constituents of the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) today vowed to continue the alliance in Tamil Nadu, not only to unseat the "anti-people" State Government in the next Assembly election but also to protect the Tamil race. Participating in a function, organised by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), got up to felicitate the party general secretary, K.Anbazhagan, on the occasion of his 83rd birthday, the leaders of the parties scotched rumours that there were differences of opinion among them. The DMK president, M.Karunanidhi, said concerted attempts were being made in a section of the media to break the alliance. It was trying to create confusion among the people and the DPA partners with the sole motive of splitting the alliance. But the attempts would not succeed, as the DPA partners were firm on remaining united to defeat the ruling party in the next Assembly election. The purpose of organising the felicitation function by the DMK was to demonstrate the unity of the DPA to the people. The party would organise in Thanjavur and Dindigul district conferences in which the DPA leaders would participate to reiterate their commitment to the aim of unity.
Close association
The DMK chief recalled his close association of 60 years with Mr.Anbazhagan who, he said, never moved away from the self-respect movement. G.K.Vasan, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, said the present alliance must continue with a view to preventing communal forces from making a come back in the State. S.Ramadoss, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder-leader, wanted more secular parties included in the alliance to make it stronger to ensure the defeat of the AIADMK Government. Vaiko, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary, said that to root out communalism, the present alliance should continue. He wanted the DPA constituents to take a vow to repeat its Lok Sabha performance in the next Assembly election. R.Nallakannu, State secretary of the Communist Party of India; Varadarajan, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader, and RM.Veerappan, president of the MGR Kazhagam, were also for the continuation of the alliance.
