Meet on instrumentation
TUTICORIN DEC. 21. A national conference on `Recent Trends in Instrumentation Applications', organised by National Engineering College, Kovilpatty, will be held at Kovilpatty on December 23-24. A release today said about 100 technical papers would be presented on virtual instrumentation, biosignal processing and biotelemetry and industrial controllers. M. Chidambaram, professor, Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, will inaugurate the conference, the release said.
Record handling of granite
TUTICORIN DEC. 21. The Tuticorin Port has created a record, handling the highest volume of granite in a single vessel, on a day. According to N. K. Raghupathy, chairman, Tuticorin Port Trust, 35,208 tonnes of granite was loaded onto the vessel on Decmber 17 bettering the previous record of 34,599 tonnes in 2002. Shipping sources indicated that the performance was by far the largest volume of granite loaded onto a vessel in any port in the world.
Heroin seized
CHENNAI DEC. 21 . One and a half kg of heroin worth Rs.1.50 crores was seized by the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau Criminal Investigation Department (NIB CID) from a car in Madurai yesterday and two persons were arrested. A press release from the office of the Superintendent of Police, said following specific information a team intercepted a car, bearing Kerala registration number near the Madurai Fathima College and seized the heroin and the vehicle. The names of the arrested persons are Bazeer (37) and M. Mustafa (36), both hailing from Palakkad in Kerala. The accused have confessed that they had purchased the contraband from an unknown person in Kerala. The source of the heroin is being investigated.
Reservation timings
CHENNAI DEC. 21. Computerised reservation centres of the Southern Railway in Tamil Nadu and Kerala will function only from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Christmas Day (December 25), according to a release.
Stamp released
CHENNAI DEC. 21. The Department of Posts today released a commemorative stamp in the denomination of Rs. 5 on Sahitya Akademi. Set up in 1954 by the Centre as an autonomous organisation, Sahitya Akademi has so far published over 4300 books in 22 Indian languages. Its highest honour, "Fellow, " is reserved for "immortals of literature." So far 66 writers were conferred "Fellowship." Stamps, first-day cover and information sheet are available for sale at all Philatelic Bureaux/ philatelic centres, according to a department press release.
IA flight skips Coimbatore
COIMBATORE DEC. 21. An Indian Airlines flight IC 976 from Sharjah, bound for Chennai via Kochi and Coimbatore this morning following a snag, IA sources said. Thirtytwo passengers bound for Coimbatore were brought to the city by road. The Indian Airlines made alternative arrangements here for the passengers bound for Chennai. While six Chennai bound passengers were sent by a scheduled Jet Airways flight in the forenoon, others cancelled their tickets and made their own arrangements, airport sources said.
Contempt plea admitted
MADURAI DEC. 21. Admitting a contempt of court application moved against P. Baskaradas, Secretary to the Government of Tamil Nadu, Agriculture Department, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court today issued notice to the official returnable by three weeks. According to the petitioner, V. Bagavathi Perumal (62), a former Assistant Agricultural Officer at Nagercoil, he was suspended from service on the date of attaining superannuation on December 31, 2001. Later, though he obtained a favourable order from the Tamil Nadu Administrative Tribunal directing the Secretary on September 24, 2003 to release all his terminal benefits and sanction regular pension due to him immediately without further loss of time, the official did not implement the order till date, he alleged.
High Court order disobeyed
Claiming that the authority did not obey even the subsequent order of the High Court passed on June 28 directing the Secretary to consider and dispose of the representation made by the petitioner within two weeks, he alleged that the official had wilfully disobeyed the order of the court. In his representation, Perumal had requested the Secretary to implement the order of the tribunal as early as possible. Arguing for the petitioner D. Sivaraman contended that the Secretary had been continuously disobeying the orders of different forums for which he was liable to be prosecuted under the provisions of the Contempt of Courts Act.
Murdered
Dharmapuri Dec. 21. A 35-year-old man was arrested on charges of murder at Kadathur here yesterday. According to the police, Krishnan (38) was a chronic alcoholic and used to pick up troubles with his neighbours. In one such altercation Perumal and Zeenat Banu who were in an inebriated state reportedly attacked Krishnan with sharp weapons. He was admitted to the Dharmapuri Government Hospital and later referred to a hospital in Salem where he died. The Kadathur police are investigating.
Public Relations Day
ERODE DEC.21. Public Relations Day was observed at the Erode municipality today. The municipal chairman, M. Subramanian, and the Commissioner, Jayaraman, received petitions from the public relating to supply water supply, drainage facilities and street lighting. The officials assured that all the grievances would be redressed within 15 days.
Killed
ERODE DEC.21. One person was killed in a road accident and another has been admitted to a hospital in serious condition. According to police, Nallasamy of Karur while driving his car with his wife Nallathal from Coimbatore to Karur yesterday hit a sand-laden lorry near the Government Higher Secondary School, Vellakoil. Nallasamy died on the spot. Vellakoil police registered a case against the lorry driver Palanisamy.
Aradhana
ERODE DEC. 21. The 76th aradhana of Sri Seshadri Swamigal would be conducted at Unjalure, Erode, from December 30 to January 4, 2005. On January 3, Seshadri Swamigal's Jayanthi would be conducted and on the next day the aradhana would be conducted. A procession with the portrait of Seshadri Swamigal would be taken round Unjalure. In connection with the aradhana, special poojas would be performed from December 30. Devotees from all over India will attend the aradhana.
