Desist from detrimental activities: NLC staff told

By Our Special Correspondent

CUDDALORE, DEC. 21. The Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) today circulated a notice among the employees asking them to desist from activities that would be detrimental to the organisation's interest.

The NLC had scaled new heights and become a name to reckon with in the power sector, through strategic planning and cordial industrial relations, and the gains should not be frittered away. The NLC management issued the notice in response to the strike notices served separately by the single recognised trade union (Labour Progressive Front) and the Joint Action Council of other trade unions.

The trade unions had objected to engaging contract labour for the removal of soil from a portion of Mine-II, and privatisation in sectors such as hospital and vehicle operation.

After three rounds of talks with the LPF (on December 1, 4 and 14), justifying its action, the management now warned the trade unions that if they went ahead with their agitation, they would be firmly dealt with.

The statement said that as acquisition problem lingered, lignite prospecting could not be done on a piece of land at Mine II for over 20 years. That portion was estimated to hold lignite reserve of 4.53 million tonnes worth Rs. 450 to Rs. 500 crores.

It had become necessary to mine the lignite in that patch, to improve the plant load factor and productivity of the Thermal Power Station II. The existing machinery was too big to be deployed, and their diversion would affect ongoing works.

If the NLC went in for new machinery it would have to incur an expenditure of Rs. 410 crores.
