By Our Staff Reporter

TAMBARAM, DEC. 21. The Poonamallee police have arrested the managing director and a senior student of the S.K.R.Engineering College at Melagaram near Nazarathpettai in connection with the suicide by a first-year student on Sunday evening.

Mohan Karthik Tripathy (19), an Electronics and Communication Engineering student, was found hanging from the ceiling of his hostel room. He was reportedly ragged by some of his seniors. The arrests were made following a complaint by the student's father that his son died because of ragging and the indifference of the management.

The police said Mohan, belonging to Gudivada in Andhra Pradesh, complained to his parents about the harassment by his seniors in the college and on hostel premises. They gave a written complaint to the college authorities, but no action was taken.

Last weekend, Mohan had been to his parents' house and returned to the hostel on Sunday evening. Soon after, some students asked him to buy a copy of a Telugu newspaper. Mohan went to his room and using a bath towel, hanged himself.

Initially, a case under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure was registered. Following a complaint from the victim's father, the case was registered under Sections 4 and 7 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1997, and under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code. The police said they had sufficient grounds to arrest Ramadoss, managing director, and Bhargav Kumar, a third-year student from Godavari district. They wereproduced before the Judicial Magistrate (II) in Poonamallee and remanded to judicial custody. The police were looking for another senior student.
