Traffic restrictions for New Year's Eve

NEW DELHI, DEC.30. In order to keep Connaught Place, which is likely to be the hub of New Year's Eve celebrations on Friday, free from congestion, the Delhi traffic police have announced a series of restrictions which would come into effect after 7-30 p.m. and remain in place till the conclusion of celebrations.

Traffic coming towards Connaught Place would not be allowed to go beyond the roundabouts of Mandi House, Bengali Market, General Post Office and Gole Market after 7-30 p.m.

Traffic coming towards Connaught Place would be stopped at the Kasturba Gandhi Marg-Feroze Shah Road intersection, Panchkuian Road-R.K. Ashram intersection, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg-Minto Road intersection, Chelmsford Road and New Delhi railway station.

No traffic will be allowed to move in the Inner, Middle and Outer Circles of Connaught Place.

Motorists coming from Connaught Place can use Sansad Marg, Janpath, K.G. Marg, Barakhamba Road, Minto Road, Panchkuian Road, Bhagat Singh Marg and Baba Kharak Singh Marg to reach their destinations. Tolstoy Marg will be one-way from Sansad Marg towards Barakhamba Road. No traffic will be allowed from Barakhamba Road, K.G. Marg and Janpath to take a right turn towards Connaught Place.

The police have also advised motorists to avoid Connaught Place after 7 p.m. In the wake of the restrictions, the vehicles going from North to South have been advised to use Mathura Road-Ring Road-Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg-Link Road, which will be freely available. Alternatively, they can use Mother Teresa Crescent Road-Rani Jhansi Marg to go from North to South.

Those coming from East and going towards West can use "C" Hexagon-Akbar Road-Mother Teresa Crescent-Park Street for their onward journey. Or they can use Mathura Road, Ring Road or Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg to reach Delhi Gate and take Jawaharlal Nehru Marg and Deshbandhu Gupta Road.

Motorists going to New Delhi railway station have been advised to reach the station from the Ajmeri Gate side and not the Paharganj side to avoid congestions in Connaught Place.

Limited parking places have been provided around Connaught Place. These will be provided on a first-come-first-served-basis. Parking bays have been provided on Kali Bari Marg, Pandit Pant Marg (excluding the roundabout of Gole Dak Khana) and near Patel Chowk behind All India Radio. Other parking lots have been provided on Ashok Road pavements near Windsor Place (towards Hyderabad House and Jantar Mantar Road near Youth Congress Office).

There will be parking bays on Copernicus Marg near Mandi House which will go up to Baroda House and also on Minto Road (towards Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Road and Press Road. On the Paharganj side, the motorists will be able to use parking bays at Panchkuian Road on R.K. Ashram, Chitragupta Road and Basant Road. Another parking lot has been provided at Kasturba Gandhi Marg near Ferozeshah Road or towards "C"-Hexagon on the same Road.

Motorists visiting various hotels located in the restricted area have been given parking labels which, along with invitation cards or tickets, will authorise them to take their vehicles to their respective hotels.

Persons living in the area and those going to New Delhi railway station will be allowed to go after due verification.

The traffic police have asked people to carry their driving licences and not drive under the influence of liquor. Several teams will be deployed for checking drunken driving across the Capital, the maximum deployment being in New Delhi. The maximum speed limit for the Capital on New Year's Eve will be 50 km per hour.
