TIRUCHI, DEC. 31 . The city mourned thousands of tsunami victims and prayed for their souls today. Over 500 people took part in a joint prayer programme organised here today under the auspices of the Dinamalar group and the Rotary and the Lions Clubs of the district. A resolution adopted at the function said the magnitude of destruction wrought by tsunami along the South Asian coast was immense and appealed to the public to rise above linguistic, religious and communal barriers and participate in the relief works. The group prayed for the peaceful repose of the souls departed in the disaster and for the survivors to return to normalcy soon. The Collector, V. Pandian, the Mayor, Sarubala R. Tondaiman, the Corporation Commissioner, Harmander Singh, the Commissioner of Police, T.P. Sundaramoorthy, the Dharmapuram Adheenam, Kumarasamy Thambiran, Government Town Khazi, Jaleel Sulthan, the Bishop of Tiruchi CSI, James Srinivasan, the founder of the Kalai Kaveri College of Fine Arts, S.M. George Adigalar and others spoke. The public also lit candles to mourn the loss of lives in the catastrophe. Later, Mr. Pandian flagged off a motorcycle expedition by the 1 (TN) Armed Sqn NCC, Madras Group `A,' that arrived from Chennai en route Cuddalore, to create awareness about organ donation and distribute relief materials to the Tsunami victims.
